Life in Germany

It is very easy to become overwhelmed when you first go grocery shopping in Germany. The layout of the shops is different, many of the products you know are not available and you have no idea what plastic wrap is called in German.
We hope the information on this page helps you with your shopping experiences.  We listed popular shops, as well as options to have groceries delivered to your home.

When it comes to buying groceries, you have a number of options available to you.

Mid-range

Depending on your budget and shopping habits, you may prefer to shop at mid-range stores, where you can find various high-quality products at reasonable prices.

Discounters

If saving money is your top priority, you might opt for discounters that offer slightly lower prices, but still maintain a good selection of items. In most of these shops, it is all about savings, and not about the shopping experience. The shopping shelves can look untidy and disorderly.

Wholesale

If you want to buy in bulk, or if you have a larger family to feed, you might consider shopping at wholesale retailers where you can find even better deals on larger quantities of food.  To shop at these you will need a business licence/Gewerbeschein (at Metro) or Client card/Kundenkarte (at Selgros). They operate similar to Makro in South Africa

Good to know

  • Shopping carts or trolley works with a coin deposit system. You can also buy plastic tokens to use.
  • Bring your own shopping bags with you. You can buy at the counter but it is sometimes frowned upon, and you also pay for the bags.
  • You have to pack your own bags at the till. Some cashiers, especially at discounters, are extremely fast at scanning products and you can feel a bit overwhelmed to keep up. The best advice is to be prepared. Either put your bags in the trolley, open them, and pack them as fast as you can, or just put everything directly into the trolley and pack your groceries into bags later. Another option is to go with another person like your spouse, one person pack and one person handles the payment.
  • If you do need more time to pack your items, put them spaced out on the conveyor belt, and also in the order you would want to pack them
  • Most plastic and glass bottles have a deposit or Pfand on them. You get your deposit back when you hand in the bottles at participating shops. Most have automated machines or Pfandautomaten. After depositing the bottles, you will get a “Bon” that you use to get your money back at the cashier.
  • If you buy fresh produce, you might have to weigh them yourself and stick the price label on the bag. Some shops sell reusable veggie bags.
  • You can buy beer and other alcohol inside a grocery shop
  • You cannot buy medication at a grocery shop, not even aspirin.
  • Cigarettes and vape juice are packed at the tills
  • At some stores, you can withdraw money at the cashier. There might be a minimum amount that you have to spend and also a maximum amount that you can withdraw. See the individual stores for more information. Here is an example from Rewe – Kostenlos Bargeld abheben

To help you navigate the products in the shops, we created substitute lists for known South African products

Substitutes and Food Info

Many South African products can be bought online. For those items you cannot find in Germany, most have a substitute. We list our substitute suggestions here,

Product Substitutes

Most products we know in South Africa are available in Germany, but unfortunately not all of them. Here is a list of product substitutes  for some

Buying online

Most of the shops listed above have online shops that deliver to your door.
For a limited list of items and fast delivery, you can use apps like Flink, WoltGorillasPiCniC or Flaschenpost

Quality of produce

If you are looking for top-notch products that guarantee quality and exceptional taste, then it is highly recommended that you choose to buy local and seasonal produce. Not only does this option ensure that you are selecting the freshest fruits and vegetables available but it also helps support local farmers and their communities. It is also essential to note that some imported fruits may lack flavor when compared to locally sourced options. Thus, it would be wise to always check where your fruits come from to ensure that you get the best quality and flavor. An example of this is when fruit is shipped to Germany; most of it goes through artificial ripening techniques such as Ethylene gas. While this process does ripen the fruit, it is done at the expense of its taste, leading to the fruit being unappetizing and lacking its natural sweetness. Therefore, buying local and seasonal fruits is always the best option for quality assurance and exceptional taste.

Bioladen

Bioladen or Biomärkte sells organic products.

Hofladen

A Hofladen is a type of farm stand that sells produce directly from a farm. By definition: “A shop that is part of a farm and mainly sells its own products directly”.
The main advantages are that you know where the produce comes from, it is fresh as it doesn’t need to be transported over long periods of time and you can sometimes even pick the produce yourself.

As the leaves begin to change colour and the air starts to feel crisp and refreshing, it’s a gentle reminder that the summer season is winding down and making way for autumn. The start of autumn brings with it a whole new host of activities for people to enjoy – from apple picking to pumpkin carving to cozy evenings spent with family and friends. And, let’s not forget about the delicious seasonal foods that become available during this time of year, like warm soups, hearty stews, and comforting baked goods.

In fact, it’s the perfect season for indulging in a wide variety of physical activities ranging from hiking to biking, camping to picnicking.

Some foods and drinks to try

Make your own Rote Grütze and serve it with Ice cream, Milchreis or pudding. Rote Grütze is a traditional German dessert that is both delicious and easy to make. Originating from northern Germany, this dish has become a favorite in homes throughout the country and beyond. To prepare your own Rote Grütze, simply gather a mixture of red fruits such as cherries, raspberries, and currants, and cook them together with sugar and a bit of cornstarch to create a thick, fruity sauce.

Take a look at this selection of delicious recipe ideas with berries

Hearty Food

When the weather outside is chilly and cold, there's nothing more comforting than a warm and hearty meal! Why not try some German classics like Rouladen, Linseneintopf or Kartoffelsuppe? Rouladen is a delicious beef dish that is stuffed with bacon, onions and pickles, while Linseneintopf is a hearty lentil soup that is both filling and nutritious. And if you're in the mood for something more potato-based, you can't go wrong with a steaming bowl of Kartoffelsuppe.

Zwetschgen

The Damask Plum, also known by its German name, Zwetschgen, is among the delicious and flavorful fruits that are enjoyed during particular seasons. It is important to know that these plums are not to be confused with the more common plums, known as Pflaumen, which are more widely available in many grocery stores. The Damask Plum is unique in its taste and texture, with a slightly tart yet sweet flavor which makes it perfect for use in a variety of dishes.

Here is a recipe for Zwetschgendatschi. Eat it with a big dollop of cream or ice cream.
You can substitute the Zwetschgen for Mirabellen

Some basic information

First I have to state that we are not tax consultants and by German law are not allowed to give any tax advice. Please speak to a professional tax consultant if you have any questions regarding your taxes in South Africa.

  • The SARS tax year is named by the year in which it ends e.g. the 2024 tax year runs from 1 March 2023 to the end of February 2024
  • South Africa uses a Residence base tax system and Germany a Source base system.
  • If you are still a tax resident in South Africa you have to declare your overseas income on your tax return. Even if you did not receive any income in South Africa. See detailed info on the SARS website
  • South Africa and Germany have a double taxation treaty which means your taxes in Germany is taken into consideration. Also see  the Foreign Employment Income Exemption information on the SARS website.
  • SARS is now using a system to reduce workload. Personal Income Taxpayers who qualify will receive Auto-Assessments.  You can check via this Tool on SARS if you have auto-assessed.  If you do not agree with the auto-assessment, please act on it immediately. All info about auto assessments can be found on the SARS website

Tax Residence in South Africa

Information from SARS on who is regarded as a non-resident

Who is a tax resident in South Africa – Reference SARS

An individual is a resident for tax purposes in South Africa either by way of ordinarily residence or by way of physical presence. The concept of “ordinarily residence” is not clearly defined and the determination of whether or not an individual is an ordinarily resident for tax purposes must be done on a case-by-case basis. A number of factors must be taken into account to make such a determination. Interpretation Note 3 (Issue 2): Resident: Definition in relation to a natural person – ordinarily resident sets out the list of factors that will be taken into account to determine whether an individual is ordinarily resident for tax purposes in South Africa.

An individual can also become a tax resident by way of physical presence. For more details in this regard, refer to Interpretation Note 4 (Issue 5): Resident: Definition in relation to a natural person – physical presence test.

An individual who is deemed to be exclusively a resident of another country for purposes of a tax treaty is excluded from the definition of “resident”. It follows that while an individual may qualify as a resident under the ordinarily resident or physical presence tests, that individual will not be regarded as a resident for South African tax purposes if that person is a resident of another country when applying for a tax treaty.

Procedure to cease tax residency with SARS

Disclaimer:We are not tax consultants, always refer to a professional Tax consultant concerning your taxes. The Term Financial immigration is not being used anymore. The new concept for tax liability in South Africa is being a tax residence or not. Before considering ceasing your tax residency in South Africa, make sure that you need to do it. South Africa and Germany have a double taxation treaty, see more on our Income Tax page.  When you are earning your salary in Germany, and you are still a tax resident in South Africa, you need to declare your foreign income to SARS

South African Inheritance

When you are a South African citizen, living outside of South Africa, there are special rules when inheriting from a South African Estate.
Important is whether you still have a SA ID document, whether you are still a Tax resident and how much the inheritance will be. Sable International shared the following article to help you understand better
