Applying for your ID in South Africa

Applying for official documents from the Department of Home Affairs has become much easier in recent years thanks to online applications, bank partnerships, and appointment systems. However, some rules are important to know ,especially if you live outside South Africa.

Important Information for South Africans in Germany

If you live in Germany, there are a few important things to keep in mind.

  • Smart ID cards cannot be issued by South African embassies abroad. The South African Embassy in Germany can currently only issue the traditional green ID book.
  • Once you have been issued a Smart ID card, you cannot apply for a green ID book again.
  • If you live outside South Africa, it is important to keep your Smart ID card safe, as replacing it may require travelling back to South Africa.

Applying Online (eHomeAffairs)

You can apply for your Smart ID card or passport online through the eHomeAffairs website.

The process works as follows:

  1. Complete the application online.
  2. Upload supporting documents.
  3. Pay the application fee online.
  4. Book a visit for biometrics (fingerprints and photo).

Biometrics must be done in person at either:

  • A Department of Home Affairs office
  • A participating bank branch in South Africa

Tip:
You may need a South African mobile number to receive confirmation codes during the application process.

Applying at Home Affairs (using the BABS system)

If you prefer not to apply online, you can book an appointment at certain Home Affairs offices using the Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS)
This helps reduce queues and waiting times.

Important notes:

  • Not all branches participate in the BABS system.
  • You can view the list of participating offices on the Home Affairs website.

New branches at shopping malls

To improve access, the Department of Home Affairs is opening offices in selected shopping malls.
The goal is to reduce long queues and provide more convenient locations.
The following malls are on the list:

  • Tygervalley Mall (Cape Town)
  • Menlyn mall (Pretoria)
  • Cresta Mall (Johannesburg)
  • Southgate Mall (Johannesburg)
  • The Pavillion (eThewkwini)

Self-Service Smart ID Terminals at Bank Branches

The Department of Home Affairs has started rolling out self-service terminals at selected bank branches in South Africa to make Smart ID applications faster and easier.
These terminals are connected directly to the Home Affairs digital system and allow applicants to complete their biometric capture (fingerprints and photo) quickly at participating banks.
At these locations, the application process takes only 5–10 minutes.

Who can use these terminals

The self-service terminals are currently available for:
South Africans who want to replace an existing Smart ID card.
South Africans who still have the green ID book and want to upgrade to a Smart ID card.

Important limitations

The terminals cannot be used for first-time ID applications.
If you are applying for an ID for the first time, you must still apply in person at a Department of Home Affairs office in South Africa.

Where the service is available

The terminals are currently being rolled out at selected branches of Capitec and Standard Bank.
The government plans to expand the service significantly over the next few years, with the long-term goal of offering Home Affairs services at many more bank branches across South Africa.
