Need a trim, a tidy-up, or a total transformation? Before you sit in the stylist’s chair, you’ll need to navigate the basics—auf Deutsch. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
This guide will walk you through how to book a hair appointment in Germany, what to say when you arrive, and the phrases you’ll want in your back pocket
The first time I went to a hairdresser’s in Germany, things got… interesting. The stylist looked at me and asked, “Soll ich dein Pony schneiden?”
I blinked. Pony?
“No, thank you,” I said politely, “but you can trim my fringe.”
She smiled and replied, “Ja, Pony.”
Back and forth we went until it finally clicked—in Germany, a “Pony” is your fringe (or bangs), not your ponytail. Your actual ponytail is called a Pferdeschwanz—literally, “horse’s tail.”
The surprises didn’t stop there. I left the salon with wet hair, because apparently, I hadn’t booked a blow-dry—or maybe I didn’t understand when she asked. Either way, I wasn’t about to risk a mystery charge on my bill!
In South Africa, you also pay for a blow-dry, but they will at least dry your hair at no extra cost. In Germany, though, drying your hair costs extra, which explains why you often see people walking out of salons with damp hair.
Unless, of course, you do it yourself—many salons let you grab a dryer and style your own hair with their equipment.
And here’s another fun twist: some budget salons charge for the basics like shampoo. These are usually the walk-in, no-appointment places. So don’t be surprised if every little detail adds up—Germany takes “à la carte” very seriously, even at the hairdressers
At most salons, you need an appointment. You can simply phone and say the following:
Hallo mein Name ist Frau/Herr xxx . Ich möchte gerne einen Termin (Hallo, my name is Ms xxx. I would like to make an appointment)
They will then ask you what you want to have done. They might ask for a date and time you have in mind, or tell you when the next open appointment is.
They will ask for your contact details
You can ask for recommendations on Facebook groups. Look for expat groups or people living in your area.

To book a haircut appointment at a hair salon in Germany, you can say:
👉 “Guten Tag, ich möchte gerne einen Termin für einen Damenhaarschnitt vereinbaren. Haben Sie einen Termin frei?”
(Good day, I’d like to make an appointment for a ladies’ haircut. Do you have a slot available?)
Let’s break it down:
If you want to be more specific, you can add:
The hardness of the water depends on the level of chalk in the water. Chalk consists of calcium and magnesium and is not harmful to your health. It can, however, cause your hair to become frizzy and dry, and dry out your skin. It can also irritate sensitive skin.
There are different grades of hardness of water. Soft, medium and hard water
The hardness of the water can be measured in Grad deutscher Härte (°dH). The scale is between 0 and 21, with 21 being the hardest. Wasser.de has a map to check the hardness of your water.
To counter hard water, you can use special shampoos or install a filter on your shower head.

When visiting a sauna in Germany, there are certain cultural norms and etiquette that should be observed. It’s important to note that unlike many other countries, saunas in Germany are typically unisex and require guests to be completely nude. This may seem shocking or uncomfortable to some, but it’s important to respect the local customs and traditions. Many Germans view the sauna as a place of relaxation and rejuvenation for the mind and body.
