Registering your child at birth – Germany
Your new baby needs to be registered at the registry office (Standesamt) within seven days of the birth in order to receive a birth certificate
If you are a South African citizen living in Germany and have recently welcomed a child, it is essential to register your newborn with the South African Department of Home Affairs. This process ensures that your child is officially recognized as a South African citizen and can obtain a birth certificate and passport.
Since you are abroad, you must register your child’s birth through the South African embassy or consulate in Germany. The main points of contact are:
❗ Original unabridged birth certificates of both parents (South African citizens) must be submitted.
❗ Original marriage certificates of the parents must be submitted if they are married. Additional requirements apply if the marriage was solemnized outside South Africa. If the certificate is not in English, a sworn translator must provide an official English translation.
The required documents for birth registration may change from time to time, so it is essential to check the most up-to-date requirements before submitting an application. For the latest information, visit the South African Embassy’s website or the Department of Home Affairs website, where you can find official guidelines and any recent updates regarding the process.

Before registering your baby in South Africa, you must first complete the registration process with the German authorities. Germany has specific naming restrictions, so it is important to check whether your chosen name complies with local regulations. You will also need to decide whether the child’s name should be registered under German law or international naming laws, which can impact name approval.
