Start of Winter (Winteranfang– astronomical)

The astronomical start of winter marks the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
In Germany, this usually falls around December 21st or 22nd. Traditionally, it’s a time to celebrate the return of longer daylight hours and the gradual approach of spring, often observed with seasonal festivals, candlelit rituals, and reflection on the changing year.
