St. Martin’s Day (Martinstag)

Martinstag is celebrated on 11 November in honour of St. Martin of Tours, known for his kindness and humility. According to legend, he once cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar in the cold. Today, the day is especially beloved by children, who take part in lantern processions (Laternenumzüge) through the streets, singing songs and carrying colourful, handmade lanterns.
In many regions, bonfires are lit, and special treats like Weckmänner (sweet bread figures) or roast goose are enjoyed.

While not an official public holiday in Germany, Martinstag remains a cherished cultural and religious tradition, particularly in Catholic regions such as Rheinland, parts of Bavaria, and along the Rhine. It is both a festival of light as winter approaches and a celebration of generosity and community.
