New Year’s Eve (Silvester)

Silvester (New Year’s Eve, December 31st) is a lively and festive occasion in Germany, marking the farewell to the old year and the welcome of the new.
While not a public holiday, it is celebrated with parties, family gatherings, and fireworks at midnight.
Many Germans enjoy a special meal, often including dishes like raclette, fondue, or Berliner doughnuts (Pfannkuchen), and toast with sparkling wine (Sekt) as the clock strikes twelve.
Traditional customs such as Bleigießen—melting small pieces of lead or wax and interpreting the shapes for fortune-telling—add a playful and superstitious element.

Across the country, fireworks light up the night sky, and the evening is filled with laughter, music, and hope for the year ahead.
