Labour Day (Tag der Arbeit)

When

01/05/2026 - 01/05/2029
12:00 am

Event Type

Tag der Arbeit, celebrated on 1 May, is a public holiday across Germany and honours workers’ rights, fair working conditions, and social justice. Its roots lie in the international labour movement, and in Germany the day still carries strong political, historical, and social significance.

Unlike in South Africa, where Workers’ Day is often marked quietly or with reflection, 1 May in Germany can be very visible. In many cities, trade unions and organisations host demonstrations, rallies, and marches, while other towns embrace the day as a spring celebration with festivals, music, and outdoor gatherings.

Most shops and offices are closed, public transport may run on a reduced schedule, and city centres can be busier than usual due to events. In some regions, especially in Bavaria, Tag der Arbeit also overlaps with traditional spring customs such as maypole celebrations (Maibaum), adding a festive local flavour to the day.
