Easter Monday (Ostermontag)

Ostermontag, or Easter Monday, is a public holiday in Germany and marks the quiet continuation of the Easter celebration. While Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection, Ostermontag is about walking it out — reflection, togetherness, and gentle joy.

In Germany, the day is traditionally slower and family-oriented. Shops remain closed, many people take long walks, visit relatives, or enjoy time outdoors. Church services continue, often with a lighter, more hopeful tone than Good Friday.

For South Africans living in Germany, Ostermontag can feel like a softer echo of home. Where Easter Monday back in South Africa often meant family lunches, leftover hot cross buns, and one more day of rest, Germany offers something similar — just quieter, more contemplative, and often spent in nature.

It’s a day to breathe again after the solemnity of Karfreitag. A day for gratitude, renewal, and simple connection — whether that’s a walk through the neighbourhood, a shared meal, or time spent reflecting on new beginnings.

Ostermontag gently closes the Easter weekend, reminding us that hope doesn’t rush — it lingers.
