In South Africa’s townships, violence, crime, alcohol and drug abuse are sadly part of everyday life. Many families lack a regular daily routine, trusting relationships, and a peaceful atmosphere in which children can learn. This is where our project comes in: Since 2023, the Thomas Peters Foundation Sonnenseite has been funding training for unemployed mothers from the townships to become “MathMoms.” After completing their training, they teach mathematics to 2nd and 3rd grade children in cooperating schools and help them with their homework. Our aim: Improve mathematical education and the quality of mathematics learning for disadvantaged children in low-income communities. Open up new prospects for mothers and children. Help mothers in the townships to process and heal their traumas. Promote mothers’ pedagogical, mathematical, and child psychology skills. Enable mothers to enter the workforce – often followed by training, employment, study, or self-employment. Strengthen mothers as positive role models for children – instead of the negative criminal role models that often prevail in the townships. Motivating mothers to support their own children in their learning increases the children’s chances of successfully completing school. Please help us! Sponsor a mother and a child. Related
